Story

Masterful craftsmanship and fine materials invariably support the reputation of Georgian jewelry. The romantic phase of the Georgian era lasted a mere decade from around 1820 to 1830 and the symbol most often associated with love was the heart. Worn close to the heart, this locket is sentimental in thought and design.

Although small in size, the 15k yellow gold locket is extremely ornate. Both the front and back surfaces are textured. On the front is an asymmetrical design of a pair of flowers crossing stems. One is that of a pansy flower always represented by the English using alternating colors. In this case a centered natural ruby radiates three half natural seed pearl petals with two petals set with turquoise. The pansy motif was romantic with its symbolism connoting the French word “pensez” thinking of you.

The other flower is set with three small turquoise gems. The back is embellished with a different textured design and the motif echoes a similar form of two flowers with leaves all in gold. The perimeter has a beaded border with a twisted wire base. The bale is original and is worked with scrolling designs and flowers. The interior has a curved heart shape glass cover for the inner compartment.

This little treasure is now very scarce and has come from a private collection into the gentle hands of The Three Graces.

Date: Circa 1830.
