Story

The carving of gems is an ancient tradition of two general types. Typically the image is an intaglio, i.e., the design in cut into a flat surface of the stone; or a cameo – a carving with a raised (positive) relief image.

This Edwardian example is particularly large for its genre and employs an oval faceted natural amethyst of an estimated 10.25 carats to display the venerable technique. Incised into the flat table or top is a delightfully charming rendition of a blooming flower and leaves inset with gold and four (4) tiny rose cut diamonds.

The image is organic and pastoral and lends itself to the translucent qualities of the medium purple gemstone. An ornate setting features a six element gallery which segues into prongs to secure the stone. Sculptural shoulders with sensuous curves gently transition to an unadorned shank.

Date: Circa 1920.
