Story

Purple is the color associated with royalty. So rare were the materials to dye fabric this color that it was literally reserved for the wealthy and nobility who could afford such a luxury. The amethyst gemstone shares tones of this exotic hue.

Yellow gold of 15k is the perfect counterpoint for this medium hued natural amethyst of an estimated 3 carats. The 10 mm by 9 mm gem, rectangular in shape with square corners is foiled and set closed back in a rub over pinched collet mount. Please note the small pinheads (or pinches) of gold placed along the outside of the rubbed over bezel – typical for the 18th and early years of the 19th century. The reverse of the ring has the traditional smooth “basket” setting underneath. Lovely shoulder details add a bit of pizzazz to the reeded shank.

Date: Circa 1780.

Important: Foiled jewelry should not be exposed to water or any other liquids for extended period of time. In addition, avoid steam cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning. If considering as an engagement ring, please keep this in mind.
