Story

Songs, novels, film and advertisement all extol the beauty of the diamond. Epic in proportion to epic in historic tales and fables the diamond reigns supreme. With its name a Greek derivative meaning unbreakable, it is believed that the diamond has been a part of human consciousness for at least 6,000 years. When its physical properties, such as the prismatic dispersion of light were discovered, is unknown. In the words of the noted mineralogist and author George Frederick Kunz “the diamond is to the pearl as the sun is to the moon, and we might well call one ‘the king-gem’ and the other ‘the queen-gem’.”

With that natural brilliance, the allure of diamonds which has ensnared us over the centuries is apparent in this pair of diamond-set earrings. Each earring is crowned with approximately 3.65 carats – a mix of twenty-four (24) old European and old mine cut diamonds with one old single cut in one. A tiered dome configuration, there are fourteen (14) diamonds in the outer edge that each average .14 carats, eight (8) in the next level, then one (1) of an estimated .35 carats centered and at the crest of the mount the top diamond is approximately .20 carats.

The color range for the pair averages I-J with some above and some below this grade but all read white. Clarity runs SI1-3 but nothing is visible to the eye and all inclusions are white or clear. The mount is platinum with an 18k yellow gold lever back and platinum ear wire. Please note that the pair has a known weight of 7.3 carats!

Date: Diamonds are late 19th and early 20th century; mounting is modern.
