Story

Serpent motif jewelry was very popular in Victorian England. Representing the romantic image of everlasting love even Queen Victoria chose the symbol to mark her engagement to Prince Albert. Realizing that romantic imagery is a truly magnificent and pristine antique necklace of 15k yellow gold.

Prodigious in width, the tubular linked chain used is at times referred to as a snake or Brazilian chain. Perfect for such a necklace, the flexible chain undulates with a luxurious slinky movement around the neck. During this Grand Period highly colored pieces sported vibrant enamels and bright gems such as turquoise.

A large snake head has been artfully crafted with unusual and precise detail work including delicate serpentine dentition, minute hand engraving and chasing on the surface and a master’s eye for whimsy. The head is embellished with four (4) natural freshwater pearls (untested but guaranteed to be natural) and twenty-five (25) natural turquoise cabochons. Tiny garnet cabochon eyes stare intently as nostrils set with two (2) minute pearls virtually flare. At the tip of the mouth a rose cut diamond glints as gaping jaws grip the original heart dangle adorned with ten (10) cabochons of natural turquoise. A glass covered locket back with fabric in the interior appoints the heart charm as well.

Date: Circa 1870.
