Story

Dating back to the 4th century BCE, enameling is the decorative art of fusing powdered or pulverized glass to metal and heating layer after layer of glass one atop another until the desired effect is achieved. Colors are achieved by using this powdered glass or by mixing colorless glass powder with pigments such as metal oxide. As the glass melts minute areas of color are formed. The process requires combining the sheer artistry which painting commands with high technical skills and then some. Given its small scale, and that each layer must melt and be layered, it is the true master who can achieve fine enamel work.

Petite overall, this Georgian enamel pendant locket is of the highest quality. It depicts the frontal representation of the face of a rosy cheeked child. Waves and curls of dark blond hair frame the cherubic image and add a delicacy which tempers the spirited and animated blue-eyed gaze.

The portrait is set into a 9k rose gold pendant with locket back of rock crystal with a yellow gold ribbed rim. The rose gold bale is embellished with three (3) small rose cut diamonds. To balance the symmetry, a small silver Maltese cross form set with five (5) old mine cut diamonds is suspended from a fitting set with a natural half seed pearl. Most likely a one of a kind locket pendant – you will never see another!

Date: Circa 1800.
