Story

Many symbols, motifs and emblems have passed down through the centuries; others which were relevant to a certain place or culture have been lost to the winds of time.

The iconography of this 19th century wide silver band is well within the later category. Appropriate as a wedding band or an eternity ring, the symbolism deeply chased and carved into the surface is a mystery in the making. It is easy to see that most of the designs are floral; on the other hand one immediately one is stumped by the representation of two vegetables or fruits with large stems and leaves curling upwardly to the side. Clearly paired together, perhaps these carrots, turnips or radishes hold meaning which is beyond our ken yet is wonderfully charming.

Date: Mid 19th century and possibly earlier.
