Story

Few of us are aware that the sapphire gemstone we generally think of as blue comes in a variety of colors. Perhaps you are already aware that the red version of the sapphire is known as a ruby and the pink sapphire is just that…a pink sapphire. Fancy sapphires can be green, white, brown, orange and even color-shifting between purple and violet as well as several other hues.

Here a lavender sapphire makes its appearance in a mid 18th century Georgian ring. Sleek and geometric, the fancy gem is a wondrous eight sided octagonal cut old sapphire. It measures approximately 9 by 7 mm (estimated weight of 2.25 carats). The luscious stone displays a slight change in color when exposed to different sources of light, i.e., incandescent, daylight or fluorescent.

The rectangular sapphire is set into a classic 18k yellow gold ring circa 1750 with a typical rub over bezel and back with basket weave design. The simple yet elegant shank connects at two points, tapers down to a banded area where it segues to a plain gold shank which tests at 10k.

Date: Circa 1750.

THE FINE PRINT

Due to the nature of antique & vintage jewelry, many diamond and gemstone weights are calculated by measurements, not removed. Actual weights are noted in the item’s description. Grading of diamonds and gemstones may vary slightly when removed.

Being as honest as possible about the items we represent for sale is our ultimate goal! Our pricing is industry recognized as fair and equitable with value as the byword.

Condition: Very good; at some point a small hole in back was opened to allow light into the stone; formerly foiled and now removed but fortunately the sapphire shows in all its glory. Evidence of a previous resizing.
