Story

This genre of fobs is referred to as a spinner. There is a mechanism, in this case a semi-hemisphere of rose gold attached to the frame of the carnelian using pins which enable the piece to spin freely. Beautifully constructed of three parts, this 10k rose gold fob sports a carnelian agate with one side carved with an intaglio and the other plain and smooth as silk. The cameo and intaglio image are often confused or used interchangeably. A cameo is a method of carving which features a raised or positive relief image whereas the intaglio has a negative image.

This piece features a right profile carving of a male and female. The man wears the helmet of a warrior and the woman is adorned with a garland in her hair and a necklace about her throat. It is possibly that the couple represents the Greek deities Ares and Aphrodite – the god of war and the goddess of love. Please note the intricate work embellishing the surround and large “O” fitting with scrolling floral forms in addition to the simple yet ornate design of the “spinner”. The fob is well balanced and can easily be worn as a pendant.

Date: Circa 1900.
