Story

Congratulations to the winner of Our Most Charming Find on The Three Graces most recent buying trip – a silver strawberry motif vinaigrette pendant!

Vinaigrettes have been on the horizon since the Georgian era. They were typically constructed as small containers with a hinged lid. Inside the container was a small hinged metal screen or grille under which a natural sponge or ball of cotton soaked in scented vinegar or liquid perfume was placed. These objects were employed to ward off offensive odors or used as “smelling salts” in the case of a lady fainting.

Fabricated from solid silver, this dated 1877 vinaigrette is realistically modeled after a strawberry down to the leaves and surface marks. Upon opening you will notice the gilded pierced screen with a lovely foliate design and enough room to store any number of little treasures within its deep compartments. The joyous charm pendant is fully marked with date and English hallmarks.

Date: 1877.
