Carved in the tradition of the Renaissance masters is this amazing blue white moonstone ring. In cameo form, the head of Medusa has been carved from this gemstone which possesses magnificent adularescence. This optical effect, also known as schiller is a glow or iridescence which seems to rise from deep within to the surface of a moonstone. The effect appears to move when the stone is moved or the source of light shifted.
The Greek Gorgon Medusa, symbolic of female power and wisdom was originally depicted as a horse with wings, then as a woman with equine hindquarters and eventually as a woman with wings in her hair. Here she is carved with such finesse that the wings entwined within her hair and snakes coiled about her neck rise up with their heads above her coif. Wide eyed, her gaze is that of a petulant child, perhaps the result of being stripped of her glorious locks of hair by the goddess Minerva (Athena) for violating the sanctity of her temple with the deity Neptune. The moonstone is so fine that in most lights it literally radiates with a white sheen.
A series of twenty-seven (27) deep old single cut diamonds faceted and polished of a total estimated weight of .60 carats (J-L color; SI1-2 clarity) surround the glowing moonstone with their own aura of brilliance. All set into a 14k yellow gold mount with a shank testing closer to 10k. The ring is truly awe inspiring in person.
