Story

The gemstone lapis lazuli is reminiscent of a star lit sky with the heavens an intense cobalt blue lightly dusted throughout with a constellation of gold flecks of pyrite. Originally designed for a man, a modified rectangle with curved corners and an incline angle to the perimeter is set within a 14k yellow gold mount. The setting is superb with winged caryatids or atlantes** of gold “supporting” an altar-like entablature embracing the lapis. A fluid decoration ornaments the sides as a frieze in a classical edifice. The wings of the figures create open shoulders with their tips appearing as appliqués. For the shank the two bodies combine and segue into serpent-like forms. Suitable for the hand of a woman or a man.

Date: Circa 1900.

**Caryatids are female figures used as pillars or supports; atlantes are their male counterpart.
