Story

One of the favorites of The Three Graces is early naive portrait miniatures in jewelry. Charming, quirky, personal and evocative, these miniatures were certainly painted with the aim of capturing the individual and not an idealized idea of a man or woman. Moreover, here we have not only our curly haired maiden, but her beloved pet dog also. Certainly rendered by an untrained portraitist who none the less captured the essence and era of those depicted.

Surrounded by glittering pastes, the miniature is painted in watercolor on an ivory wafer and set under glass. The pastes are set into cut down silver settings, foiled and dynamic in framing the charming couple. The large elongated oval is typical of the later part of the 18th century.

Date: Circa 1790.
