Story

Often we attribute the ultimate in artisanship to jewelers of the Georgian era and to the standouts of the Victorian age, such as Castellani, Giuliano and Fontenay. However rare, at times we come across a true treasure of a jewel designed and crafted by some unknown genius.

Such is the case with this mid to later 19th century pendant of 18k yellow gold. Falling into the tradition of a large lozenge with a drop, an unusual cut of garnet has been employed in the main section of the pendant. Table cut in the manner more akin to that of the mid 1700s, the underside of those garnets has been hollowed out in the form of a rounded concave cavity. This particular cut allows for a wondrous refraction within each of the four gems set at the four compass points around a cabochon of natural turquoise.

Please note the corded or twisted gold wire work from the then current archaeological revival style providing the architectural infrastructure of the piece. Details such as the twisted Fleur-de-Lys motifs and triple orbs of granulation embellish the superb pendant. The simple faceted garnet drop with corded rope bezel and granulated orb completes the pendant. Still retaining the original bale, the underside of the pendant reveals the open set garnets and a central gold back engraved “A” and possibly “D” or “J” or “I” in italic script.
