Story

Traditionally claw jewelry has been set with those of a tiger. This bib necklace, extraordinary in its own right employs the claws of a lion. We typically associate the lion with Africa and few are aware that this noble beast also once roamed from Greece through the Middle East and onward to northern India. Deemed to be a powerful and courageous animal, the claw is considered as a commanding amulet.

Here we have an amazing example of this fine art rendered as a necklace. Actual lion claws of graduated size have been capped with coin silver. Two rows of claws interspersed with hollow coin silver medallions of the stylized head of a lion set with red glass eyes drape across the décolletage. As gargoyles atop a Gothic building, chains of silver links attempt to control the six ferocious beasties and their cache of fifteen claws.

Date: Circa 1900.
