Deserving of a place beside a fine oil painting, this hand-painted miniature enamel jewel epitomizes the art of jewelry.
French in origin, in a fan motif, both sides display different painted scenes.
Can you imagine the mastery needed to paint in a medium this small, and in enamel? Enamels are powdered color glass. They are fired at high temperature, and thus melt. These shades can run together, and are exceptionally difficult to control their outcomes. Often multiple firings are needed complicating this painstaking process.
Now look at theses two scenes. Their subtlety of colors, images, details, and shading are superlative.
One side of the fan depicts an image of The Three Graces gathered under a tree in a serene landscape. One play a lyre, the others flank each side of her. One standing, and two resting.
To add to the fan's realism, even the sticks are painted in black and white.
On the reverse, a breathtaking water and landscape unfolds (pun intended). A rocky outcrop, tower, sailing ship, waterway, buildings, in the distance, a tall peak, even tiny birds in the sky, are part of the tableau.
The guard of the fan, engraved edges, and fittings are all of 18k gold.
Originally this hung from a stickpin; and yes upside down, exactly as a fan would be carried. The Three Graces did not convert this to a charm or pendant, but purchased this as is. The original fitting and French hallmarks remain intact. Only a larger "O" fitting as added.
It is a rare occasion when The Three Graces offers jewelry with the image of The Three Graces. While there are numerous commercial, mass produced pieces and cameos, true antique examples are a joy to present.
