Iridium & Palladium

Most everyone knows of platinum. Not as many are aware of iridium or palladium.

The rainbow and the goddess Iris serve as the basis for the name of precious metal iridium (for some of its more esoteric chemical properties). And palladium is associated with protection and security for the Gree figures Pallas and Athena. So whether you wish to conjure up a prism of color, or desire some fortification for everyday trials and stresses, there is a white metal for you beyond the norm.

Both metals are used in jewelry as an alloy (mixture) with platinum. Some jewelry is even solid palladium and its popularity as such has soared recently. Why? It has a look almost like platinum but its price point is far softer. Another use? It is frequently alloyed with yellow gold to make white gold. A rare metal, iridium is often alloyed with platinum and many pieces of jewelry bear the hallmark of '10% Irid Plat" meaning the contents are 10% iridium and 90% platinum. Either name adds up to the more gorgeous jewelry so don't be confused when you hear these less common metals.
