Art Nouveau Silver Vesta Pendant
Pocket match safes or vestas were created to contain “strike anywhere” matches in a manner which reduced the risk of being lit accidentally and causing harm to the possessor. Designers and artisans constructed beautiful and clever boxes in which to keep the matches.
Wonderful Art Nouveau repoussé work of scrolls and styled swirls frame a smooth silver area which is perfect to engrave a monogram or image. The hinged lid opens and closes securely. On the hinge side is a bail through which a cord, thin ribbon or chain can be passed. Would make a charming and unique pendant which would hang horizontally.
Measurements: 2-9/16 inches (6.5 cm) in length by 1-½ inches (4 cm) in width by just over ¼ of an inch 0.6 cm) in thickness. Weight of 32.4 grams (20.8 dwt).
Hallmarks: “Sterling 925”.
Condition: Good; light wear to inner area of plain silver surface.
