Egyptian Revival Opal Sapphire Ring

SOLD Item 6645

In November 1922 Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the boy King Tutankhamun brimming with pharaonic riches and treasures never before seen. This landmark occasion was celebrated throughout the world with a reawakened interest in all things ancient Egypt. (To be historically correct this was the second revival of ancient Egyptian motifs and symbols which was generated by Napoleon’s campaign in the ancient land.) Unbelievable artifacts intensified a desire for jewelry featuring the falcon, the sphinx, and the scarab.

In fact, Tiffany (of stained glass fame) had a personal collection of scarabs and House of Cartier was so mesmerized by them that the motif was incorporated into many of their designs. Van Cleef and Arpels was famous for its strap bracelets depicting Egyptian revival motifs in pave diamonds and colored stones.

This finger ring exemplifies the height of the Egyptian Revival period set off by “Tutmania” as the strong geometry and clean lines of ancient Egyptian architecture meld beautifully with the sophisticated qualities of the Art Deco style. Superbly sleek with its aerodynamic form, a navette or boat shaped opal is surrounded by narrow bands of rose cut diamonds which emphasize the marquise shape of the gem. Cabochons of bezel set sapphires of a full-bodied lavish blue flank the central stone which has a rich iridescence and remarkable play of changing colors in red, green, and blue with flashes of fire that seem to shift with the light. On each side are wonderful winged forms reminiscent of Isis, the Egyptian winged goddess. The shank begins with chased hand work and ends to form a graceful band.

Measures just less than 1 inch in length by a shade under ¾ of an inch wide for the top (2.5 cm long by 1.8 cm wide for the gem and top area); the opal measures 7/8 of an inch long by ¼ of an inch in width (2.23 cm by 0.7 cm).

In very good condition; light wear expected with age; one sapphire slightly chipped – noticeable only with a jeweler’s loupe or with good magnification.

Currently a size US 5-½ (UK K; Euro 16) but could easily be sized.

Dates to circa 1925. Placed on your finger an image of Cleopatra sitting upon her throne comes to mind.
