Magnificent Georgian Cannetille Bracelets

A picture here is not worth as much as actually seeing these rare and extraordinary bracelets. Dating to the early decades of the 19th century, the scholarly research of specialized texts covering jewelry of this period would not reveal such a fine pair gracing the wrists. The prevailing fashion was about bracelet pairs which were rather showy. This set goes one step further, perhaps even two steps. Women wore divine and billowing long dresses – tight at the waist, revealing décolletage and sometimes puffed sleeves with fitted cuffs or small capped sleeves which left porcelain white skin ready to showcase the finest in jewels.

Coming to us out of a fairy tale as gold spun from a wooden spinning wheel, each bracelet is of cannetille gold work, a technique used to make light yet luxurious jewelry. This labor intensive and breathtaking jewelry fell out of favor soon after this time and as of yet no one has dared to again take up the difficult process.

Of a diamond-like shape, the bracelets are set with an interesting mix of faceted aquamarine and amethyst with a few amethyst colored pastes and cabochons of turquoise colored glass. In the finest jewels (those of kings and queens as well) one finds an amalgam of the real and the faux. The subtle coloration is heavenly with the light and airy gem tones matching the openwork gold. Each is set with a fine serrated bezel conveying a lacy feel to the halo of the gems.

The strong links of 18k are repoussé of yellow gold. Inventive in shape, we have very striking and feminine mirror images of curved and ornate shapes joined in the middle with the twelve links concluding with a crescent moon shaped clasp.
