Hand Painted Spaniel Plaque
For many of us there is something rather enigmatic when gazing into the face of a dog. Inspired and influenced by the dog within, this hand painted and signed porcelain plaque is a timeless reminder of the place that canines through the eons have shared with humankind. Possibly once a decoration affixed to the lid of a box, the plaque is slightly round and is rimmed with 24k gold paint. In contrast to the lavender backdrop is a King Charles Cavalier spaniel dog with wistful eyes and a melting expression, ears all feathery and long, and even has a teal colored bow endearingly tied around its neck. A perfect rendering of this gentle and sweet breed. Signed "R E Hoyus", although the "H" and "Y" are a bit difficult to discern. It measures 2 inches in length by 1-5/16 inches high (5.1 cm by 3.3 cm). In excellent condition except for one tiny loss of paint at the top around 12:00. Dates to circa 1860 – 1920 and is most likely, English in origin. Placed within a shadow box or framed would be ideal and handsomely set off this oval portrait.
