One ought to be sitting by a massive hearthside, fire crackling with the wind and snow whipping outside. Yet there you are inside in repose--a plush cashmere wrap encasing you in warmth and on your wrist – this impressive bracelet. Gazing at the gold upon bronze tone of the 18k gold and those hessonite garnets just like a cinnamon stick in a glass of brandy. Every aspect exuding richness and finery. Its scale – commanding; its surface – ornate with its cannetille work, pearls and gems; and its use of the rather scarce hessonite garnet.

Hessonite garnets are indeed a garnet, but the color moves to more of a brown with hints of russet and harvest. Sometimes seen in 18th century Spanish jewelry, it is not often employed. One has to wonder why the hues are so beautiful. Cut in faceted ovals, the stones, set upon the surface of the links, are closed back and foiled. Four (4) natural pearls adorn the gems at each junction, and in the center is a floral form of gold. Nestled amidst these are the coils and frills of cannetille gold work – some of the last vestiges of its use that we see in the 19th century. Wide links of embellished finery are replicated by two thinner links with minimal but precise decorative surfaces. Space that is more open defines these areas. Four main links and four open links comprise the bracelet.

Measuring 7-¼ inner diameter with the large links measuring 1-9/16 inches high by 1-7/8 inches wide (4 cm high by 3.5 cm wide); the open bands of gold measuring 5/8 of an inch long by 3/16 of an inch wide each (1.7 cm long by 0.5 cm wide each). The original clasp is so well concealed that it is hard to differentiate where the bracelet begins and where it ends. Circa 1840 and most likely English in origin. Superb condition.
