Lyrical Enamel and Gold Day Night Earrings
Enamel work again became popular in the 19th century. Its roots in the Renaissance and later centuries, really up into the 17th century were once again revived. Early and mid Victorian jewelry is often less about stones and gems, and more about artistry and style, metal work and detail. Enamel fell well within this realm and the revival of various archaeological styles, as well as a Renaissance revival, made all techniques from earlier times once again in vogue.
Set with French blue enamel against the 18k rose gold, these superb day night earrings are a marvel to behold. Almost untouched, they come down to us in superb condition. The tops are typical back to front ear wires, which come into the back of the ear and close at the front. The overall form is baroque fashioned in repoussé gold work of quite intricate and fancy forms. Where enamel graces the swirls, the surface if quite still, but the juxtaposition of the textured gold, with its recesses and floral motifs, makes for a feminine and appealing combination.
Circa 1835, the early Victorian, late Georgian earrings are a perfect length of 2 ¼ inches long with ear wire and 2 inches without; by 5/8 inches wide (5.7 cm long by 1/5 cm wide).
One can wear the tops alone, or of course, the tops and bottom together, thus the day night designation. One of the best ideas of jewelry history that has yet to be revived. Hallmarked on both each top fitting of the bottom drop and again on the ear wires and most likely German in origin. Light on the ear, yet showy. Treasure these for another lifetime.
Mint condition with nothing of note. Interesting to note that a book, written in German on German jewelry of the 19th century had two pair of earrings very similar listed and one resides in the Museum fur Kunst und Kulturge-schichte in the city of Dortmund; the other in the Landesmueseum fur Kunst und Kulturgeschichte (Museums of the Applied Arts and Culture).
