Unusual Victorian Shell Cameo Lion Brooch

$1,550 USD Item 6316

Jewelers and artisans became enamored with organic materials during the Victorian era. Carvers from Italy flourished and often shell was used to bring to life unequaled imagery. Here the use of one solid piece of shell has been artfully carved using its layers as a three-dimensional canvas for a cameo brooch of a male lion. Overall white, the mane has been emphasized by leaving an outer layer of brown shell. Touches and streaks of color range from an ambrosial caramel to a palate of mouth-watering chocolates. It is quite unusual to come across a free standing cameo let alone one of such exotic subject matter.

The artistry of this creation lies in the ability to utilize and manipulate the coloration within the layers of the shell. The male is easily distinguished by its mane and here the artist has imparted a sense of regality with the finely carved details of the flowing mane, strong body and powerful legs.

With the original silver tube hinge, C-clasp and pin stem intact, the condition of this antique brooch is very good to excellent. There is one small area of green patination near the top of the tail; otherwise fine. Nicely sized at 1-15/16 inches (4.8 cm) in length by 1-1/4 inches (2.8 cm) in height by 7/16 of an inch (1.2 cm) at the deepest. Dates to circa 1860 and the Grand Period of the Victorian era.
