Fiery Antique Diamond Pendant Brooch

Almost all of us can still be drawn in by the power of diamonds. While there are in abundance and around us everywhere, when they are set within fine antique jewels and radiate with inner fire, there is no resisting them. And just wait until you behold this pendant brooch with your own eyes as you will be swept away. A central diamond of over ¾ of a carat sets the tone for the entire medley. There are another sixty (60) diamonds encrusted over the entire surface. While impossible to accurately weight the stones in their settings, there appears to be about three (3) carats of diamonds all in all.

As jewelry history progresses we see the emphasis transform from one of the metal and enamel work to greater Importance placed on gems and stones and finer and finer metal work until the lacelike and invisible settings of the Edwardian era and pave settings after that.

Here the stones are all set into silver and all but sixteen (16) stones are open backed. Alternately, the others diamonds are set in open back settings. The type of mount is a pinched collet and also a wrap around silver mount. Most all stone cuts are old mine cut (often referred to as old European cuts) but there are four stones surrounding the central diamond that are rose cuts. Dating to circa 1850, this is a transitional gem from the Georgian period to the Victorian era. During this time you will find Maltese crosses, and other even armed designs similar in some form to this one.

Later than its origin, a fine craftsman placed a hinged loop so that this can go from a pendant to a brooch. Also added was a center piece in the middle so that a brooch mechanism could be secured in place with a tiny screw and key, but removed so the pendant lies flat when used on the neck. Elegant and ingenious.

Measures 1 3/8 inches each way (3.5 cm) by ¼ inch deep (.7 cm) without mechanism for the brooch. In very fine condition with later mechanisms as noted, but finely done and some light stone wear and typical surface patina and wear.
