Antique Cannetille Gold & Amethyst Cross Pendant
The foiling on these gems make them dazzling! Glimmering amethysts – thirteen in all (13) lend their beauty to this cross. Lilacs, mauves, deep orchid purples all glint and refract with sheer radiance. The main teardrop cut amethyst is over 6 carats! Each of the three main stones appears to be approximately 2 1/2 carats, the center a little over a carat. There are nine (9) pear shapes, one large round cut, a central oval cut, and four (4) small round cuts that accent each of the points of the cross. We defy you to take your eyes of this one.
The gold work is cannetille in 18k. Cannetille is tiny wires of gold spiraled and worked into a tapestry of three dimensional gold. This work, only fashioned in the early part of the 19th century is a marvel to study. The cross measures a luxurious 2 7/8 inches long and it is just over 2 inches wide. It is both a brooch and a pendant with a pendant bale which folds down on a hinge when worn as a brooch.
Dating to circa 1820 it is in wonderful condition with little of note except the bottom pendant has a touch more patina and is slightly darker than the rest of the gold work. There are also two tiny loops soldered on the back perhaps added after the original piece was finished. Functioning as an anchor for safety chains, or perhaps they had some additional drops hanging from them, but most likely as a safety. The gold may have been cleaned at some point as it is quite bright.
