Extraordinary Antique Hair Drop Earrings
Another best of its kind, these singularly are one of the finest and superb examples of hair earrings possible. The Three Graces rarely purchases hair jewelry because much that was made was rather mundane and the designs became prosaic. However, these are a story unto themselves. They measure a remarkable 4 inches in length (9.5 cm). The width is 5/8 by ¾ of an inch (2 cm by 1.5 cm). They are made of Pinchbeck and date to the late Georgian period, circa 1840, the last breath of the era - in itself quite unusual. The overall shape and scale are accurate for that period. At this time hair was upswept, which made way for long, glorious earrings and to show off the neck and face. The elongated drop, the bits of cannetille work, the top portion – are all very early for Victorian or late for Georgian. The surmount is a bubble of Pinchbeck decorated in the center with a tiny star in and encircled with cannetille. The drop has a top with similar cannetille work around the edge. Then begins the long and amazing open weave drop of hair. To view this with magnification is a wonder, as the slender hairs are artistically braided and woven. Almost all air, yet no mistaking their strong presence. The bottom terminates in a diminutive textured ball, the surface dimpled with little pockets and puffs. Rarely does one find any jewelry in pristine condition. The original ear wires are intact and literally, there is not one hair out of place. These have come from a private collection and have not left the box for nearly 20 years. Superb and a must for the true collector. Little engineering marvels; and the best thing is that these look superb on anyone. English in origin.
