Scalloped Opaline Paste Brooch C. 1780
Opaline paste is just rapturous. Better than real opals...possibly just. This is a wonderful scalloped brooch set with six (6) teardrops of opaline paste, foiled and set in a closed back setting. They are set in silver and the colors that emanate range from pale violet, to light fiery pinks and hints of orange.
Opaline paste was used in the 18th century and rarely seen today. These teardrops are arranged in a flower motif, and surrounded by a bed of round cut pastes. The reverse is vermeil, or gold over silver.
Measurements: 1 inch across and 5/16 of an inch deep.
Condition: Very good condition with one opaline foil slightly refracting a tinge stronger than the other five. Original C clasp and pin stem.
Date: Circa 1780.
