Antique Rose Gold Eternity Band

Kudos to the English as their system of hallmarking often provides us with a host of information which would otherwise be a mystery. In this example of an eternity band or wedding ring it was made and marked in the city of Birmingham. It was also created by a maker using the mark of “EMM”. While we can find no reference to tell us who the maker was, this is all too common given the thousands upon thousands of jewelers producing jewelry.

Hallmarks can also include the purity assay of the metal used. Marked as 12k, it was used from 1854 and subsequently discontinued in 1932 (as was 15k gold which was then standardized to 14k in the same year). Thus, we can deduce that this 12k rose gold ring was made sometime between 1854 and 1932.

The letter date for this piece is obscured but based on its By its color of gold, rose, and its pattern and construction, we can easily date this to the later part of the 19th century. The fully patterned ring is deeply worked all over with a lovely scrolling foliate design typically of English design through much of the 19th century.

Date: Circa 1890.

Further History: Exact dating can be ascertained if an individual alphabetic letter representing a specific year is impressed along with the city of assay. Books and reference guides list these for us. In 1975 all UK assay offices (London, Sheffield, Birmingham and Edinburgh) have the same date letter.
