Unusual Poesy Ring "United Hearts Death Only Parts"
What is a posey ring? Essentially an English tradition developed during the Middle Ages, poesy (posie, poesy, posy) rings were only available to the rich and noble of the times as the bands were of high carat gold. Incised with a saying, aphorism or rhyme, the rings were given as a token of love or friendship or presented as a wedding band.
The inscriptions, usually expressing strong sentiment were often taken from books written expressly on the language of courtship. The sayings tended to be short and romantic in content and were first inscribed using Roman or Lombardic capital letters in Norman French which eventually evolved into the use of Gothic script and Middle English with its quaint and frequently indecipherable spellings.
This 22k yellow gold poesy ring is quite unusual as it is marked with English hallmarks and a maker’s mark of “BU”. Contemporary to the crafting of the ring, Thomas Burridge, a London jeweler was working around 1703, as was William Busfield of York from the late 17th to the early 18th century. Both used the almost identical mark. Ind is engraved to the interior in script with "United hearts death only parts".
