Continve Constant - Silver Poesy Ring

In eleven years we at The Three Graces have had only one other silver poesy ring (posie, posy). This scarce example is made from high grade silver and is quite sturdy at more than 5 mm in width. The poesy engraved to the interior, "CONTINVE CONSTANT" has the U inscribed as a V as was the Latin custom as these letters were virtually interchangeable. In poesy rings capital Roman letters were used from the middle of the 16th century and gradually replaced by Italic font even into the 18th and 19th centuries. This particular ring is suitable for a man or woman as a wedding band or “marriage” ring.

Date: Circa mid to late 17th century.

Historical Notes: What is a poesy ring? Essentially an English tradition developed during the Middle Ages, poesy rings were only available to the rich and noble of the times as the bands were of high carat gold. Incised with a saying, aphorism or rhyme, the rings were given as a token of love or friendship or presented as a wedding band. The inscriptions, usually expressing strong sentiment were often taken from books written expressly on the language of courtship. The sayings tended to be short and romantic in content and were first inscribed using Roman or Lombardic capital letters in Norman French which eventually evolved into the use of Gothic script and Middle English with its quaint and frequently indecipherable spellings.
