Edwardian Suffragette Pendant

Emerging during earlier 19th century and gaining force till the early years of the 20th century was the movement to allow women the right to vote. America and most of the countries on the Continent (with the exception of Finland) continued with this disenfranchisement of suffrage. Those who allied and supported the idea of granting the right to vote to women were referred to as suffragettes. A number of groups sprang up in defense of this cause. In 1903 the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was formed to take action into their own hands with the motto of “Deeds not Words”. The official colors of the organization were purple which represented dignity, white stood for purity and green symbolized hope.

Superior craftsmanship is the vanguard for this magnificent 18k yellow gold and silver pendant. The focal point is a round faceted natural amethyst of approximately 8 carats and 13 mm in diameter. Deeply hued, the color is actually a tad bit darker in person than illustrated by our photographs. Enclosing the lush gem is a surround of white enamel with tiny dots with a green and white enameled perimeter with seven (7) old mine cut diamonds set in silver. The bale fitting is set with three (3) additional old mine cut diamonds which brings the total estimated weight of the ten (10) white diamonds to .69 carats. The pendant is accompanied with a modern fine rolo chain of 18k white gold.

Date: Circa 1910.

+ Measurements, Condition & More

Measurements: Pendant is 1-1/4 of an inch (3.2 cm) in length including bale by 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Chain is 23 inches (58.4 cm) in total length. Weight of 13.6 grams (8.7 dwt) for pendant and chain.

Condition: Very fine; a tiny restoration to one area of white enamel which is barely visible even with magnification.

Origin: Most likely English.

Note 1: Stones were not removed to preserve the integrity of the setting. All weights are approximated by measurement and formula and may vary from actual weights.

Note 2: There was a good deal of jewelry decorated with this color scheme during the Edwardian period as gems such as amethyst, diamonds and peridot were quite in vogue. Consequently, not all jewels with this specific color scheme can be referred to as “suffragette jewelry” .
