Victorian Pearl Pendant Earrings
Near mint antique jewelry is always a joy to come across such as this pair of Victorian 18k yellow gold pendant earrings. Superbly designed of with a two element construction, these long and light earrings are almost in the same condition as they were when created more than 150 years in the past.
The surmount is dome shaped with a series of tier-like levels with floral or dart form openwork embellished with a delicate natural half pearl. The articulated pendant is a vision in gold tracery and pierced design. Swaying back on forth on a finely made hinge, the bottom element appears as a pendulum from a fantasy mantel clock beset with a central half seed pearl surrounded by five more and seven tiny darling dart or teardrop shaped dangles.
The reverse reveals a detail of curious interest – the initials “S. D.” were marked on the interior back circle. Was it the original owner? Perhaps those are the initials of the donor of a precious gift to his love. What wonders did they witness; what extravaganzas are part of their history? What will they experience in the future? That is yours to answer.
Date: Circa 1860 - 1870.
Measurements: 2-15/16 of an inch (7.5 cm) in length by 7/16 of an inch (2.2 cm) in width. Weight of 12.0 grams (7.7 dwt) for the pair.
