Georgian Pyrope Garnet Pendant Earrings
Ornate, long and light in the late Georgian tradition, these drop earrings of 14k yellow gold originally began life as day night earrings. The lozenge shaped surmount, secured to the pendant drop with an “O” fitting, features four (4) rich claret colored faceted garnets enclosing a central pyrope garnet.
Open work 14k yellow gold with scroll and swirl designs frame a series of flower motifs set closed back with the sumptuous faceted garnets. Ridged crimped collets caress each of sixty-eight (68) garnets in both earrings.
Date: Circa 1840.
Measurements: 2-1/2 inches (6.4 cm) in length including ear wire and 2-1/4 inches (5.7 cm) without by 1 inch (2.5 cm) at the widest. Weighs 7.7 grams (5.0 dwt) for the pair
Condition: Excellent; top "O" fitting to each bottom drop has been replaced. Formerly day night earrings converted at some point from back to front ear wires to shepherd's hooks; modern 14k yellow gold ear wires.
Origin: Most likely European in origin.
