Magnificent! Color Shift Purple Sapphire, No Heat

A magnificent rectangular cut natural color changing sapphire is an immediate attention grabber. With no indications of having been heat treated, the estimated 5.1 carat stone shifts from a blue purple hue to that of a definitive purple when moving from daylight or fluorescent lighting to traditional incandescent light. Overall, in most lighting situations it appears violet or purple in color with a superior hue and saturation.
A most apropos coronet mount of 14k yellow gold is the setting of choice for the luscious sapphire which is graced with a surround of ten (10) deep hand polished old mine cut diamonds. Bifurcated or split shoulders each glisten with a mix of ten (10) old mine cut and old hand polished single cut diamonds. In all, thirty (30) diamonds have an estimated total diamond weight of 1.75 carats (J-L color range; SI1-SI2 clarity). Three (3) of the diamonds (one in surround and two smaller gems) are "Cape" color diamonds.**
This ring is accompanied by a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certificate only for the sapphire stating it is a color change sapphire with no evidence of heat treatment.
Date: Circa 1890.
Measurements: 3/4 of an inch (1.9 cm) in length north to south on the hand and rises 1/2 of an inch (1.2 cm) in height off the finger. Weight of 8.7 grams (5.6 dwt).

**Cape is part of the older terminology for the grading of diamond color. According to expert David Federman of Modern Jeweler "by 1911, when W.R. Cattelle, a later London merchant of prominence, published his book, "The Diamond", the term designated diamonds with a slight-to-pronounced yellowish cast. In addition, Perry Wagner stated in his 1914 book, "The Diamond Fields of Southern Africa" that "cape" had been a color classification since at least the turn of the century.
