La Miríada - Natural Pearl Diamond Pendant
Throughout history gems and pearls which exhibit extraordinary characteristics have been gifted with special names. As has been done with diamonds (Hope and the Koh-i-Noor), a number of famous large pearls have been so named such as the Arco Valley Pearl given by Marco Polo to Kublai Khan and the 500 year old La Peregrina Pearl given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton and recently auctioned.
Upon initially seeing this pearl pendant, we at The Three Graces were so enthralled with its myriad contours and colors that it was decided to give the radiant beauty her own name – that of “La Miríada”. A natural saltwater pearl of the species Pinctada, it is a large exceptional baroque pearl of 11.0 mm by 10.55 mm of great luster with a relatively infinite number of hues of cream with shades of blue grey and gold.
“La Miríada” has been placed into a silver cap of an inverted tulip configuration set with twelve (12) rose cut diamonds and a bale of silver topped 14k yellow gold embellished with two (2) additional rose cut diamonds for a total estimated diamond weight of .40 carats.
The pendant is accompanied by a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certificate for the pearl stating that is natural saltwater.
Date: Circa 1890 with a modern bale.
Measurements: 1-1/4 inches (3.1 cm) in length including bale and 1 inch (2.5 cm) without by 3/8 of an inch (0.9 cm) in width. Weight of 3.1 grams (2.0 dwt).
Condition: Very good to excellent; this was converted from a stickpin to a pendant with the bale added; one diamond with a tiny edge chip only visible with magnification.
Note 1: Diamonds have not been removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting. All diamond weights have been approximated by measurement and formula and may vary from actual weights.
Note 2: The certification was performed when piece was a stickpin; it was recently converted to a pendant.
