Historic British Hallmarked Suffragette Ring

For some, a finger ring gem set with amethyst, periodot and a diamond is quite lovely; to others, the piece is a tribute to a phenomenon which revolutionized Western politics during the course of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. No, it is not the 1870 ratification of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States stating the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude" as this right of citizenry was not afforded to women in either the United States nor in Great Britain. The colors of purple, white and green were associated with the women’s suffrage movement.

Scarce and most feminine, this dainty ring of 18k yellow gold symbolizes an idea as weighty as the universe. A horizontal profile of gold is emblazoned with three (3) faceted amethysts, three (3) faceted peridot and an old mine cut diamond, all in modified gypsy settings which are incised into the surface. Open work and gentle curves ornament the delicate appearing shoulders and silken antique shank.

Historical Notes: The late Christie Romero, a brilliant researcher, historian and editor of “Warman’s Jewelry: Identification and Price Guide” reported that the so-called suffragette colors of green, white and purple (not violet) do not in actuality represent the acrostic, "Give Women the Vote. The symbolism in the color scheme, i.e., purple for dignity, white for purity and green for hope which truly represented the movement.

No matter the origins of the emblematic apologue, the colors have been regarded as synonymous with the movements in both Europe and the United States for supporting the rights of women to include the right to vote. The campaign not only impacted on the civil liberties of women but also influenced fashion and jewelry of the times. Please note that this triple play of color was fairly popular during the time and not all pieces emblazoned with this triad was indicative of the suffragette movement.
