Edwardian Pisces Enamel & Gold Pendant
We tend to view astrology as an artifact of the “New Age” movement of the second half of the 20th century. In actuality it was during the last years of the Victorian era when astrology once again became innovative and exciting since the mid 1600s.
Of course with the advent of a “new” trend, designers took up the flag and jewelry specific to astrological signs and symbols became the rage. This specific example of 14k yellow gold and pink enamel shows very fine craftsmanship and detailed surface work. The influence of both Art Nouveau and Edwardian design is apparent in the rampant curves, swirls and botanical motifs employed.
Centermost is a pair of open mouth fish with entwined tails which terminate in floral designs. The astrological symbol for Pisces, the abbreviation “FEB” and “Pieces” are depicted in raised gold. A bottom border of six flowerheads set with old single cut diamonds segues into a neoclassical garland of scrolls and leaves.
Engraved to the reverse in italic script is “Mary L. Woolsh” surmounted with the number “17”. This versatile piece has been ingeniously engineered with fittings for a fold-down bale, brooch and watch pin from which a charm can easily be suspended.
A perfect birthday gift – subtle as a beautiful pendant until viewed closely. This piece is very similar in its exquisite detail and style to several Newark period makers such as Sloan & Co. from whom we had a Capricorn locket (see item 13414).
Measurements: 1-1/16 inches (2.6 cm) in length and width. Weight of 8.4 grams (5.4 dwt).
Hallmarks: Pat June 24 94 (for 1894).
Origin: American in origin.
