Aesop's Fable of Stork and Fox Perfume Bottle
As we know the series of short stories known as Aesop’s Fables (Book of Fables ca. 5th century BCE) are typically animal-based tales which incorporate a specific cultural moral meant to pass on to children.
Employing a theme so appropriate for a perfume vial is the story of The Fox and the Stork**. This long-necked beauty is crafted of vermeil (gold over sterling silver) has a textured surface which resembles the materials that usually make up a bird’s nest. The front of the ovoid flask features a raised image of a stork facing a seated fox; the reverse shows a flock of three storks in flight.
Twisted rope handles flank the sides and serve as attachment points for the ornate link chain replete with riding crop dangle. Pull off the cap to reveal the six-holed silver stopper which enables the enclosed fragrance to rise from within the vial.
Date: Circa 1910.
Measurements: 4-7/8 inches (12.5 cm) in total length including chain. Bottle is 1-7/8 inches (4.7 cm) in length by 1 inch (2.5 cm) at the widest. Fob attachment is 1-7/8 inches (4.8 cm) in width. Weight of 16.4 grams (10.6 dwt).

Accessible to the Fox, the Stork, of course cannot partake of the meal because of the structure of his beak. In turn, the Stork has the Fox over for a meal he serves within a very long necked jar with narrow opening – the Stork can eat; the Fox cannot. Moral of the story: Do unto others what one would wish for oneself.
