Sentiments: Sloan & Co. Heart Locket
Designed and manufactured by the prestigious firm of Sloan & Co. located in “the city of gold and platinum and precious stones” (aka Newark, New Jersey), the enigmatic heart locket takes on a slightly puffed profile of 14k yellow gold. The front of the hinged locket is ornamented in the center with a gypsy set brilliant cut diamond of an estimated .03 carats. The interior reveals two compartments ready for photos and keepsakes all your own.
Date: Circa 1950.
Measurements: 1-1/8 inches (3 cm) in length including bale by 7/8 of an inch (2.1 cm) in width. Weight of 8.2 grams (5.3 dwt).
Hallmarks: “14k”; Sloan mark.
Condition: Excellent; plastic inserts for the interior locket compartments.
Origin: American.

Historical Notes: In 1891 the company became known as John A. Riley & Sloan & Company; in 1895 it became Sloan & Co and in 1896 an office was opened at 21 Maiden Lane in New York City. The company produced elegant jewelry for high-end retailers all across the nation including Cartier and Tiffany. The city of Newark played a major role in the design and manufacture of jewelry from around the 1800s through to the 1950s with Sloan & Co. one of the major players and innovative for the time producing affordable jewelry for middle-class Americans. During the peak Newark jewelers produced 90% of America’s 14k gold and 50% of its 18k jewelry.
