Bohemian Rhapsody: Antique Garnet Brooch & Earrings in Box
Nothing makes the heart of a jewelry connoisseur go pitter patter quite like an item of antique jewelry in its original box. A Victorian era demi-parure containing a brooch and earrings of Bohemian (pyrope) garnets has somehow managed to remain with its shaped textured leather box of issue.
In domes of fire and intensity, row after row of dark claret colored garnets interspersed with tiny natural seed pearls are pavé set around a large centered cabochon pyrope garnet bounded with a ring of natural seed pearls all in 15k rose gold over silver. The earrings display the original back to front ear wires and the brooch its original tube hinge and C-clasp.
Date: Circa 1880.
Measurements: Brooch is 1-1/16 inches (2.6 cm) in diameter and weighs 11.8 grams (7.6 dwt).
Earrings are 11/16 of an inch (1.7 cm) in length with ear wire by 1/2 of an inch (1.3 cm) in diameter. Weight for the pair is 4.2 grams (2.7 dwt).
Condition: Excellent, with one garnet replaced on one earring; original front to back ear wires. Box is good for its age; light staining to interior; wear to the high points and edges; button latch is missing but still closes securely.
Origin: European, most likely former Bohemian region.
