Dynamic Art Nouveau Pendant Brooch
No matter what label is applied – French Art Nouveau, German Jugendstil, Italian Stile or Spanish Modernisme – we can just refer to the movement as breathtaking in form and design.
Here that statement is personified in this pendant brooch of silver and gilt silver. Exquisite aesthetics and exceptional proportion characterize this circa 1900 piece. A half moon form of silver, hand hammered for surface texture. Two smaller half moons of smooth surface silver are enhanced with curved lines terminating in a scroll in a flattened almost two dimensional grille-like element. As a purple sun rising above is a faceted natural amethyst double bezel set.
Below is a frieze of silver embellished with a series of gilt silver pyramidal shapes from which drapes a “fringe” of various lengths of flattened batons suspending sections of silver link chain all terminating with a freshwater pearl drop. Each of the three centermost chains is set with a faceted round natural amethyst forming an inverted triangle shape.
Date: Circa 1900.
Measurements: 3-7/8 inches (10 cm) in length by 1-5/8 inches (4.1 cm) in width. Weight of 13.6 grams (8.7 dwt).
Hallmarks: “935” for silver; maker's mark of “HB”.
Condition: Excellent; light wear to gilding which now faint reads closer to a silver color.
Origin: European.
