French Antique Pearl Dormeuse Earrings
These French earrings of 18k yellow gold are referred to as “dormeuse” earrings. Also called “sleeper’ earrings as these petite beauties are so comfortable that sleeping with them offers no discomfort whatsoever. The original back to front ear wires are constructed in such a manner that no pressure is put on the earlobes and the front of the earring is directly attached to the lever back wire. Delightfully petite in size, the berry shaped earrings feature an insect and butterfly motif gypsy set with four (4) tiny natural seed pearls. These Victorian era earrings are for an infant yet will fit an adult sized ear with a small lobe.
Date: Circa 1890.
Measurements: 9/16 of an inch (1.5 cm) in length including ear wire and 7/16 of an inch (1.1 cm) without by 3/8 of an inch (0.9 cm) in width. Weight of 1.2 grams (0.8 dwt) for the pair.
Hallmarks: French eagle's head.
Condition: Excellent; a tad bit of wear to nacre of pearl if viewed with magnification.
