Victorian Vanity in a Diamond Locket
Spanning the second half of the 19th century and beyond the locket was the most popular item of personal adornment. This particular 14k rose gold example in the round is from 1900 and brings to mind the oft forgotten art of the monogram, a staple of the Victorian and Edwardian era. The typical form was to feature the first letter of the surname as the middle and largest letter, and the first letter of the given names in smaller letters flanking the large one. Here in hand engraved to the reverse in flowing Italic script are the initials “EMS”.
The front presents with an old European cut diamond of about .12 carats gypsy set in a round recess with an incised starburst pattern emanating outwardly toward a beautiful reeded border. The inside reveals the locket to be double box or double sided, i.e., having two compartments in which to place both a photo and a keepsake. The two original rims are intact and able to retain the covers. Quite smart and nicely sized.
