Scarce Georgian Black Dot Paste Drop Earrings
Georgian black dot paste earrings are in one word scarce. It is nearly impossible to come across any 18th century paste let alone this particularly large and lovely example in earring form. Although the jewel is weighty on the ear, it is nonetheless worth the “burden”.
A marriage of two differently dated elements, the surmount is mid 19th century and not black dot paste although the pastes have been set in silver with the characteristic Georgian aspects of being foiled, set closed back and with crimped collets.
The drop is magnificent with the figure eight design and floral motif studded with scarce 18th century black dot pastes also foiled, placed in a closed silver setting and with a rub over collet.
Measurements: 2-5/8 inches (6.6 cm) in length by 7/8 of an inch (2.1 cm) in width. Weight of 25.4 grams (16.3 dwt) for the pair.
Condition: Very good; bottom drops are earlier than the tops and are a marriage. All pastes in bottom drop are original and in excellent condition; small side pastes are a bit less vibrant but well matched in color. Top pastes are a bit cloudier in color. Overall outstanding.
Date: Circa 1790 for the drops; mid 19th century for the tops.
