Georgian Black Enamel Memorial Ring

The custom of many English rings having literal personal information carved or inscribed upon them provides a glimpse into individual lives and social customs of the British people during the 18th and 19th century. One interesting fact is that while we have often been told that most of the people who lived over a century ago had shorter life spans yet The Three Graces has noted quite the opposite. Many of the rings we have seen and sold commemorate lives which lasted into the later years of life with many aged 80 years or more.

Here memorializing Thomas Bateson Esquire, who passed at the age of 57 on the 15th of May 1811, is yet another example of a person shedding this mortal coil at a respectable age.

Most certainly those individuals with the means to afford rings of this sort for their heirs and loved ones to wear had a higher quality of life. Access to ample food and proper shelter, medical care and the like meant a probability of living longer than their less fortunate countrymen did. Nevertheless, it remains an intriguing fact which we repeatedly encounter.

Of 18k yellow gold, the gold letters are raised and are filled to the lowest point with black enamel. These wide bands often were made after the passing of the loved one or specified in wills as to upon whom these gifts of remembrance were to be bestowed.
