Luxury Length - Antique Silver Long Guard Chain
Longchains, also known as guard chains have been worn during both the Georgian and Victorian eras. The chain could be won as a singleton or in multiples, across the shoulders, around the neck, tucked into the “girdle” of a dress or attached to the bodice to form two symmetrical or asymmetrical festoons over the chest. The Victorians liked to secure a watch, keys or lorgnette from the chain.
This particular example is quite long at 75 inches; most typical antique guard chains seen today are between 60 and 63 inches. Oval shaped Belcher links are solidly constructed of sterling silver. August in weight and substantial in feel, the chain is finished with swivel or dog clasp fitting.
Measurements: Approximately 75 inches (around 190 cm) in length. Weight of 61.6 grams (39.7 dwt).
Hallmarks: 925; "G" on the dog clip.
