Original and True Sentiment: Victorian Regard Ring
An acrostic ring is one in which a name or expression is revealed through the arrangement of the stones and the first letter of each spelling out the saying. This style of ring was launched in Paris at the beginning of the 1800s with one of the more popular “word puzzles” being that of R-E-G-A-R-D using a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, another garnet and diamond as the foundation stones in the language of gems.
Quite popular in France, America and England throughout the 19th century, it has become more and more difficult to come across a piece of jewelry which was originally designed in such a form. Due to such scarcity, a cottage industry has sprung up catering to the removal of the original gems and replacing them with “the right ones” to create the acrostic.
This “holdover” from the early or romantic period of Victorian jewelry is truly all original. Set within a gorgeous 18k yellow gold mount, ten (10) creamy white natural half pearls assemble into a floral form to surround a center of precious gems with the message of REGARD. The open and pierced under gallery gives an elegant and elevated rise to the matrix of the ring as incised decoration accents both the shoulders and band. This sentimental ring comes accompanied by a Victorian leather bound ring box with velvet and silk lining which may or may not be original to the piece.
