Ornate Silver Filigree Bead Necklace
Suggestive of lace realized into metal, filigree is delicate jewel work comprised of curled, twisted and plaited fine pliable threads of metal sometimes soldered together to form a desired shape or object.
Graduated in size, nineteen marvelously crafted silver filigree balls have been joined with simple elongated oval links of silver. Twirls, curves, scrolls and floral motifs of hand fabricated filigree wire work have been layered one upon the other creating a complexity of design and greater depth that most filigree work does not display.
Although large and chunky in proportion, the ornate silver orbs are hollow. Consequently, the necklace is light on the neck and a perfect length to wear with most necklines.
A number of provincial areas in Germany and the surrounding countries, especially those of Eastern Europe have long traditions of silver filigree work. Somewhat similar examples can be found in the German book “Alter baüerlicher Schmuck" by Gislind Ritz.
