Victorian Micro Mosaic Scarab Earrings
Tiny little tiles of iridescent and vibrant colors of green, orange, red, white, black and shades of grey comprise a wondrous micro mosaic of a scarab beetle complete with features and antennae. The micro mosaics are into a mount of gilt metal (possibly silver but to be sure testing would remove some of the gilding). The backs are constructed rather naively for such laboriously worked fronts yet the beauty of these darling earrings does shine through.
Measurements: 15/16 of an inch (2.3 cm) in length including ear wires and 11/16 of an inch (1.8 cm) without. Together this pair of antique earrings has a weight of 7.7 grams (4.9 dwt).
Condition: Very good; gilding is slightly worn commensurate with age and use; micro mosaics are excellent with perhaps one tiny tile missing by the head of one of the insects which is visible only with magnification.
Date & Origin: Circa 1870 and is Italian in origin.
